PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Database Administrator, under the direct supervision of the Executive Director of Technology, is responsible for managing and maintaining database systems to ensure optimal performance, data integrity, and security.  The position plays a critical role in implementing best practices for database administration, monitoring database usage, troubleshooting database issues, and supporting database design and development efforts to support district goals and objectives

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, business related field or equivalent required
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee

 

     Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to extract, transform and load data using SQL Server SSIS, SQL Server BI, MySQL
  • Knowledge and use of FTP, SFTP and other secure data transfer protocols
  • Familiarity with database security best practices and regulatory compliance requirements

 

     Experience

  • Experience in managing cloud database environments and aligning database structures with district requirements.
  • Experience in the maintenance and support of multi-user computer systems utilizing Microsoft  SQL Server, MySQL, and SQL Server Cluster environments 
  • Experience working with relational databases
  • Experience in report writing using SQL SSRS, IBM Cognos or other database report writers 
  • Experience is designing SQL queries and stored procedures

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Manage and maintain database systems to ensure optimal performance, data integrity, and security.
  • Implement backup and recovery procedures to safeguard data against loss or corruption.
  • Monitor database usage and performance, identifying and addressing any issues or bottlenecks.
  • Manage user access and permissions, ensuring compliance with security policies and regulations.
  • Collaborate with development and IT teams to support database design and development efforts.
  • Develop and implement database maintenance plans to ensure ongoing reliability and performance.
  • Stay up to date on emerging technologies and best practices in database administration.
  • Is aware of the district's curriculum and instructional implementation strategies and the specified ways in which the library and student computer system support instruction
  • Promotes collegiality, teamwork and participatory decision making among all district staff members
  • Promotes sound communication techniques with support staff and in their contacts with others, both within and outside the school district 
  • Is aware of and supportive of guidelines pertaining to assigned responsibilities in Board Policy, Administrative Regulations and the Administrator's Manual 
  • Is prompt and thorough in completing assignments and attending to details accurately and efficiently
  • Plans, organizes, and implements all activity related to the maintenance and repair of the district database systems
  • Provides for the district, through the maintenance of accurate records, data for improved strategic planning
  • Provides consultant services to district staff in the development of strategic plans for the extension of the library and student services computer system in the district
  • Understands the inter-relationship between the district's student management computer system and PEIMS reporting to the Texas Education Agency
  • Attends informational meetings and training sessions as needed to support district initiatives
  • Seeks out and participates in professional development programs
  • Available after normal business hours and other non-workdays for special projects and to respond to District and system emergencies
  • A high priority on providing outstanding customer service and turnaround time
  • Strong ability to work with others
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced office environment, supporting many people at once
  • Ability to solve problems and handle situations diplomatically

  • Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.), work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces, work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours.
