PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The role of the District Dual Language Instructional Coach is to improve English language learner success at elementary.  The coach primarily supports teachers and students through co-teaching and modeling of research-based second language acquisition strategies; evaluates resources that support student learning, provides professional learning relevant to bilingual teachers and administrators, and provides feedback to teachers, students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and district goals.  The District Dual Language Coach analyzes state and district data to measure student progress and provide targeted support to dual language teachers.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
  • Valid Texas teacher certification for PK – 5th grade.
  • Bilingual certification required for elementary position; ESL required for secondary position.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License, a good driving record, and proof of insurance on vehicle used to travel to district
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.

 

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Demonstrated communication skills, both written and oral in English and Spanish.
  • Extensive knowledge of standards-based curriculum and research-based instructional practices, coaching skills, ELPS, TEKS and STAAR.
  • Leadership style compatible with the position.
  • Extensive knowledge of District initiatives.
  • Strong presentation skills and experience in developing and facilitating professional learning sessions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a classroom teacher preferred.
  • Experience with technology applications.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Curriculum and Instruction

  • Collaborate with the curriculum and instruction bilingual team to maintain a district and campus vision for program improvement.
  • Mentors classroom teachers and support staff for the purpose of supporting staff in the instructional process.
  • Has extensive knowledge of the 5 components of effective reading instruction and demonstrates methods required to perform effective reading intervention to address the needs of each student.
  • Initiates new and innovative programs and practices based on sound research and evaluation components.
  • Meets with the director of bilingual department and bilingual specialist at least monthly to ensure fidelity to implementation of JISD District standards and programs.
  • Provides continuous and systematic procedures for professional growth for classroom teachers through co-teaching, modeling, workshops and demonstrations pertinent to methods and materials appropriate to various levels of instruction for ELs.
  • Consults frequently with classrooms teachers on matters relating to second language acquisition. Helps teachers to diagnose student strengths and weaknesses and to match these skills with appropriate techniques, materials, and/or technology.
  • Assists campus principals and other administrators and/or supervisors in implementing the instructional and dual language program framework.
  • Assists in the evaluation of ongoing programs and makes recommendations for changes.
  • Develops and implements model teaching programs based on current research into teaching and learning and aligned to Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) curriculum.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of novice and/or struggling teachers and provides support and feedback including classroom coaching, and demonstrations appropriate to various levels of instruction.

Professional Development

  • Designs, supports, and facilitates staff development programs consistent with the District and national standards for professional staff development for English Learners and supportive of content and performance standards.
  • Attends appropriate professional meetings and workshops to maintain proficiency and to acquire new ideas for instructional improvement. Informs administration of the effects of current and impending legislation.
  • Incorporates content depth, the use of varying modalities, effective grouping practices, concept differentiation and problem solving into all training and professional development.
  • Participates in and supports District efforts in working closely with identified campuses.
  • Assists in developing competencies in planning and preparing for instruction.
  • Provides appropriate coaching to encourage instruction and practice that meets the multiple learning needs of students.
  • Assists staff in formally instructing beginning teachers in the use of existing curriculum materials that meet District goals.

Research and Development

  • Provides staff and parents with the latest developments and information related to curriculum including the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), STAAR test and TELPAS.
  • Carefully analyzes student performance data and plans according to identified student needs.

School/Organization Improvement

  • Serves as a resource to principals, campus instructional coaches, teachers, and support staff in the achievement of the Campus Improvement Plan.
  • Keeps abreast of innovative programs and instructional strategies in order to establish model classrooms for all students.
  • Conducts follow-up sessions with teachers to discuss/clarify strategies presented in staff development and classroom demonstrations.
  • Performs other duties and accepts other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Responsible for properly maintaining district records, adhering to all policies set forth by the District for records maintenance and learning the records retention schedule for department records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, based on department needs 
  • Must complete designated district technology proficiencies each year
  • Requires a basic knowledge of technology/computer skills
  • Ability to use personal computer to access district programs, emails, and other resources
  • Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
  • Ensure compliance with the Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics
  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job
