PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Follow routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent preferred
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License, a good driving record, and proof of insurance on vehicle used to travel to district
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check

 

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of minor repair techniques and building and grounds maintenance
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment and lift heavy equipment
  • Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies
  • Ability to carry out directives from supervisor
  • Must be able to understand instructions and communicate in basic English
  • Ability to read and understand instructions regarding cleaning procedures, operating/maintenance instructions, safety rules and procedures

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Keep the building clean, sanitary, and comfortable during duty hours
  • Report to various campus locations on as needed basis
  • Set up tables and equipment for meetings or assemblies as required
  • When assigned to a campus, report to the Lead Custodian for instructions for the day
  • Maintain appearance of location, including trash pick-up
  • Guard against fire and accident hazards by keeping all fire-fighting equipment in serviceable condition
  • Reduce operation and maintenance cost of custodial program to the minimum without reducing efficiency
  • Improve the appearance of buildings by keeping them clean and orderly
  • Follow procedures for locking, checking and safeguarding facilities
  • Mow and detail grounds around school campus as instructed
  • Sweep grass cuttings, trimmings, and pick up trash and place in school dumpster
  • Follow procedures for locking, checking and safeguarding facilities
  • Help prevent property loss that may be caused by abuse, freezing, neglect or careless usage
  • Keep floors clean, waxed, and buffed as scheduled
  • Clean door facings and washes windows as scheduled
  • Practice economy by turning off all utilities when not needed, and practices “preventive maintenance” by keeping all door stops, lock, etc. in serviceable condition
  • Keep restroom fixtures, hardware, tile, mirrors, etc. clean and replenishes supplies as needed

  • Attend custodial training and/or in service sessions
  • Report any damage or maintenance needs to proper authority
  • May be required to do some painting
  • Keep light bulbs and tubes replaced
  • Follow daily duty schedule as assigned by Lead Custodian
  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures
  • Follow established safety procedures to perform job duties
  • Move furniture or equipment as required
  • Punctual and dependable
  • Perform other duties as assigned, based on campus needs 
  • Must complete designated district technology proficiencies each year
  • Requires a basic knowledge of technology/computer skills
  • Ability to use personal computer to access district programs, emails, and other resources
  • Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
  • Ensure compliance with the Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics
  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job

Equipment Used: 

  • Office equipment – personal computer, printer, calculator, multi-line telephone, software programs and peripherals, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position
  • Communication equipment – radio communication equipment, cellular telephone

 

Mental Demands:

  • Ability to read, concentrate, communicate (verbally and written), interpret, reason, understand verbal instructions, memorize, coordinate, compile, compute
  • Work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress

 

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent: Sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs and/or ramps, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity, distinguishing colors, driving, traveling
  • Occasional: Lifting, heavy, 45 pounds or more

 

Environmental Factors:

  • Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration
  • Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.)
  • Work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces
  • Work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours
