PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Perform maintenance and repairs on a variety of district HVAC units, ice machines and other refrigeration equipment.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License, a good driving record, and proof of insurance on vehicle used to travel to district
  • Texas State Master’s Licenses for HVAC and Refrigeration, preferred
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Read schematics and wiring diagrams and a thorough knowledge of electrical theory and application
  • Manage and communicate with personnel
  • Perform mathematical calculations
  • Diagnose and resolve problems
  • Use hand and power tools
  • Work independently

 

Experience:

  • Minimum (5) five years of experience in the trade with experience trouble shooting and repairing boilers and air cooled, chillers, ice machine, and other refrigeration equipment

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Comply with District directives and Maintenance Policies and safety procedures
  • Develop procedures and schedule for preventative maintenance on all district HVAC equipment, ice machines, and other refrigeration equipment
  • Coordinate, inspect, and report to the Maintenance/HVAC Supervisor, contractor’s work as required for new installations and repair of equipment
  • Develop procedures for the recovery and recycling of refrigerants to conform with the Clean Air Act
  • Recommend recovery and recycling equipment to be purchased by the district
  • Report status to potential and/or pending problems with installed equipment to the Maintenance/HVAC supervisor on all refrigeration equipment
  • Order material and parts as required for maintaining HVAC and refrigeration equipment
  • Perform all line maintenance as required for satisfactory operation of refrigeration and HVAC equipment within the district
  • Perform preventive maintenance and periodic checks on all district HVAC and refrigeration equipment
  • Ensure that all safety requirements are followed
  • Keep all HVAC related tools and equipment in good working order
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams and possess knowledge of electrical and HVAC components
  • Possess knowledge and perform maintenance of control systems for HVAC equipment operation
  • Maintain shop and truck inventory and orders parts as required to maintain equipment operations
  • Serve as lead craftsman
  • Perform other duties as assigned, based on department needs 
  • Must complete designated district technology proficiencies each year
  • Requires a basic knowledge of technology/computer skills
  • Ability to use personal computer to access district programs, emails, and other resources
  • Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
  • Ensure compliance with the Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics
  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job

Equipment Used: 

  • Office equipment – personal computer, printer, calculator, multi-line telephone, software programs and peripherals, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.
  • Meters, gages, welding equipment, ladders, hoists, hand and power tools, pipe bender, propane torch
  • Light truck or van

 

Mental Demands:

  • Ability to read, concentrate, communicate (verbally and written), interpret, reason, understand verbal instructions, memorize, coordinate, compile, compute,
  • Work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress

 

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent: Sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs and/or ramps, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity, distinguishing colors, driving, traveling
  • Occasional: Lifting, moderate, 15-44 pounds

 

Environmental Factors:

  • Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration
  • Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.)
  • Work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces, work alone
  • Work prolonged or irregular hours
