PRIMARY PURPOSE:

To improve the instructional programs, services, and support afforded to students with disabilities, and to provide support and guidance to special education personnel.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Certification Requirements

  • Teacher certification or endorsement in special education

 

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, in written and oral formats
  • Demonstrate communication skills, written and oral
  • Demonstrate organizational skills
  • Demonstrate ability to develop and implement staff development
  • Knowledge of public laws and district procedures regarding special education students and programs
  • Knowledge of curriculum (PK-12)
  • Supportive Management style compatible with the position

 

      Experience

  • Five (5) years teaching experience in a special education setting
  • Two (2) years supervisory experience in a special education setting

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Coordinate and monitor the program implementation, evaluation and refinement of assigned special education components and programs
  • Support school personnel to ensure compliance with local, state and federal special education policies and procedures in assigned schools and/or facilities
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and evaluate procedures associated with the organizational needs of the special education department
  • Collaborate with campus personnel on the selection and implementation of instructional strategies, modifications and accommodations needed by individual students with disabilities
  • Assist campuses in planning, evaluating and providing instructional materials and equipment for assigned special education components and programs
  • Plan and conduct staff development according to assessed needs
  • Assist department and campuses by collecting analyzing special education statistical data, as needed
  • Coordinate, schedule and facilitate ARD/IEP meetings
  • Attend Special Education Department meetings and/or training sessions at the district level, as assigned
  • Facilitate the transfer process for students and transfer of related documents to ensure compliance and successful student transition within and outside of the district
  • Demonstrate the district’s core values
  • Participates in professional development activities to maintain current knowledge of personnel rules, regulations, and practices
  • Maintains a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job

Equipment Used: 

  • Office equipment – personal computer, printer, calculator, multi-line telephone, software programs and peripherals, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.
  • Communication equipment – radio communication equipment, cellular telephone
  • Video monitoring equipment

  • Occasional: Lifting, moderate, 15-44 pounds; carrying, moderate, 15-44 pounds

 

Environmental Factors

  • Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration
  • Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.), work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces, work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours.
